Retail Committee – Adopt-A-Corner Program

The Adopt-A-Corner Program began in the spring of 2003 in support of the Lake Highlands retail business community. Fifteen major retail corners have been identified. Volunteers adopt an intersection near their home and get to know the key commercial business people in their neighborhood. This includes shopping center owners, brokers, leasing agents and business owners.

The Retail Committee takes a partnering approach to supporting our commercial business community. Initially it can be difficult to establish a relationship. Historically, homeowners have called on brokers and shopping center owners just to complain. Once they realize we offer something of value, they are quite happy to work with us.

The committee offers a variety of value-added services:

  • retail survey results, demographics, neighborhood feedback
  • an “A-drive” for prospective tenants
  • letter campaigns to show neighborhood support
  • community participation opportunities for business owners
  • eyes and ears for safety, clean-up

Several corners have “grown” into small sub-groups that have their own meetings to work issues for that specific corner. Working in teams keeps the energy level higher. The map below shows the major corners that have been adopted and those still needing an “owner.”
